Music and the Chills
February 23rd, 2009The chills. Don’t know what that is? Have you ever just sad down and you suddenly felt a cool feeling down you’re whole body? You’re body just feels weird and you get goose bumps all over your arms and body and you just feel cold. As much as it happens randomly, some music just gives you the chills. For me, its specifically classical music. More specifically the piano and violin. A lot of people hate classical music for no apparent reason. Hate is a strong word, they just think its boring. Maybe playing classical piano for 12 years has made me think otherwise. But, if you’re looking for originality and the true source of music and its inspiration for the past couple of hundred years, classical music is the way to go. I would remember seeing my dad who grew up with classical music, just sitting in front of the stereo in his room just blasting classical music. I heard it over the video game music I was playing and I just sort of gravitated towards my dads room to see why it was so loud, and he just sat peacefully. I remember the quality of the song too. It was all orchestrated and the violin part stood out. I tried to say something but he just put his finger up and I just stood there and listened. When the song ended I felt cold and weird. I then asked him what it was and he told me it was from an opera called Thais. I thought to myself, opera? Where are the loud obnoxious voices of singers who I don’t understand? I was just perplexed and to this day everytime I randomly play the song, I get the chills. The song is called Meditation from Thais by Jules Massenet. Yeah, I have no idea what any of that means, but its beautiful.
